 My Story

I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, where I began my competitive athletic career in swimming and softball. As an avid sports participant and fan, I have always been interested in the psychological aspect of the game.

My love for competition and interest in psychology led me to Western Kentucky University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Communication Studies.

From there, I pursued my dream of attending the highly accredited University of Denver, where I graduated with a Master of Arts in Sport and Performance Psychology.

Over the years, I have developed a focus and passion for working with athletes on the mental aspects of their game to not only enhance their performance, but to improve their overall mental well-being. So in 2018, I started Peak as a way to serve as an advocate for mental health, and to help individuals and teams refine their mental game.

Experience

While in Colorado, I worked as a Mental Skills Consultant for the Center for Performance Excellence (CPEX). CPEX is a nonprofit consulting organization that provides sport and performance psychology and life skills coaching to the Denver community. During this time, I consulted with various clientele, including an elite-level swim team, a collegiate lacrosse team, and individual athletes/performers.

Furthermore, I acquired experience working as an assistant to the highly talented sport psychologist Kendra Dunn, PsyD, CMPC. During this assistantship, I was exposed to both the clinical and performance side of sport and performance psychology. Most importantly, this is where I learned and practiced firsthand what it takes to run a successful business in this field.

 What are mental skills?

Also known as cognitive or psychological skills, mental skills are internal capabilities that can be trained to help individuals improve their performance by learning to use their minds efficiently and consistently. These skills can be used to enhance both performance and overall well-being.

What is the importance of mental performance training?

Everything we do has both a physical and mental component. However, athletes and performers typically place the majority of their attention and effort on training their bodies so that their physical performance can be both strong and consistent. While this is a highly influential element of training, what is often neglected is the mental aspect of their game.

When the psychological aspects of sport and exercise are not adequately trained, the slightest shift in mentality can dramatically affect physical performance.

Whether during practice, in the middle of a competition, during a presentation, while sitting in a meeting, on the way to a game, during warm-up, or on the drive home, the mind is always on. These moments could be filled with debilitating nerves, doubt, chaos of thought, or they could be filled with excitement, confidence, and complete focus.

The importance of mental performance training becomes increasingly evident at the elite level, where there is a very minimal difference in physical ability. Thus, it is often an individuals’ or teams’ collective daily mentality that gives them the edge over their competition.
